You Only Barcelona Once: The Reason Behind the Mantra

Studying Abroad in Barcelona, Spain

While traveling has always been a huge part of my life, I didn’t have the opportunity to visit Europe until I studied abroad in January¬†of 2014. Not only was I going to Europe for the first time in my life, but I was going to be living in one of the greatest cities in the world – Barcelona.

I made a promise to myself upon arriving that I would make the most out of every single moment by living every day to the fullest possible extent. And that’s exactly what I did.

The idea that “You Only Barcelona Once” pushed me to say yes to every opportunity that presented itself. It made me step out of my comfort zone on a daily basis. It changed my outlook on life and helped me to see all the great things that come from having an open mind. It rekindled my desire to explore. It helped me meet lifetime friends and make amazing memories with them. It pushed me to travel as much as I could in only 6 months. But most of all, it helped me to become a more confident, independent and happy individual.

I applied this idea that there was only one time to have this experience to everything I did, everywhere I went. Even when I wasn’t in Barcelona, I was holding this idea close to heart and it never let me down. Now I am not saying everything went according to plan, because life simply doesn’t work like that. But I am saying that even when things went wrong, there was a way to make the most out of a bad situation.

This mantra is something that changed me, for the better. It’s something that has stuck with me ever since and it’s pushed me to continue to push my own boundaries even when I’m not traveling the world.

If you’re reading this, I hope you can relate to this idea and use it to make the most out of your experience abroad. Remember that life’s too short to worry about the negative. So focus on the positive and make the most out of everything.
